Prosciutto factory and tasting
Inside a prosciuttificio we follow the ham from salting to the long rest in the curing rooms, then taste Prosciutto di San Daniele DOP with the producer.
Hilltop home of the famous ham, of an ancient library and the Sistine Chapel of Friuli
On a hill above the Tagliamento, San Daniele owes its fame to the sweet prosciutto cured by the breezes that meet here from the Alps and the Adriatic. But this small town also keeps one of the oldest public libraries in Italy, and a church so richly painted it is called the Sistine Chapel of Friuli.
The Biblioteca Guarneriana was founded in 1466, when the humanist Guarnerio d'Artegna left his books to the community. Its treasures include illuminated manuscripts, a Byzantine Bible from the late 12th century and a 14th-century manuscript of Dante's Divine Comedy.
In the church of Sant'Antonio Abate, Pellegrino da San Daniele covered the walls with Renaissance frescoes of the life of Christ, glowing with colour: the Sistine Chapel of Friuli.
From the top of the hill the view opens over the Tagliamento and the green moraine hills, while in the town the hams rest for at least thirteen months before they earn the San Daniele brand.

Prosciutto di San Daniele DOP, served with fresh bread and a glass of Friulano. At the end of June the Aria di Festa festival celebrates it in the streets.
